Working out with Curls and Kinks

Happy 2014! Its a new year, and we have 359 days to reach our goals in work and life!

One of the most common goals or resolutions is to get into shape. But we curly girls know all too well that our hair can get in the way.

I always debate: “should I work out early in the morning, before work?” or “maybe I will workout after work”. Once I figure that out, it’s weights, cardio, or both? If I’m just lifting, there usually isn’t too much change in how my hair looks, but if I do a cardio workout, almost always the stair master or interval training on the treadmill, I sweat. A lot. To the point that it would be indecent to not wash my hair immediately afterwards. But will all this cardio damage my hair?

In scouring the web for a solution, the answer really does start with your workout routine.

My workout makes me “glisten”

For the days when you have a low intensity workout, Nikki (from Curly Nikki and NaturallyCurly.com), suggests that you pull your hair back and use a scarf to keep your edges down, followed by either nothing (love that!) or a water rinse or co-wash. Check out her article on Essence.com here.

MY workout makes me SWEAT

Cardio intense workout?  According to Black Women’s Health, you need to wash and condition your hair immediately after. Not washing can actually cause the damage that we worry about it. If you’re heading to work right after, setting lotion and scarf will give you a simple and sleek updo for the day.
